The pancreas is an organ that segregates digestive enzymes passing to the small intestine and produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon.
Pancreatic enzymes help to break carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids in chyme.
It has two functions, an endocrine function and another exocrine function:
- Endocrine function: responsible for producing and segregating two important hormones, i.e., insulin and glucagon, from structures called the islets of Langerhans.
- Exocrine function: it consists of the production of pancreatic juice which is expelled into the second portion of the duodenum through two excretory ducts.
