ISOMED has developed a novel, non-invasive, non-radioactive and convenient breath test kit for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori called TAU-KIT.
The principle of TAU-KIT is based on the strong urease activity of Helicobacter pylori. When the labelled 13 C-Urea reaches the stomach, the urease enzyme hydrolyses the Urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide labelled with 13 C. The CO2 produced is absorbed by the blood vessels, diffused into the lungs and finally exhaled.
This simple breath test method is very convenient. Firstly, the patient administers the citric acid solution, Citral, and after 10 minutes exhales a normal breath sample into the reference labelled tube.
The 13 C substrate is then consumed. After 30 minutes, the patient exhales a second breath sample into the second sample tube. The breath samples are analysed by isotope ratio mass spectrometers.
TAU-KIT is authorized by the Spanish Health Ministry and subsidized by the Spanish National Healthcare System as a pharmaceutical product sold at pharmacies on a medical prescription basis.
Internationally, TAU-KIT is sold in over 30 countries worldwide, through a continually growing distribution network.
TAU-KIT instead of Endoscopy?
TAU-KIT can be used as a non invasive alternative treatment to an endoscopy for detecting and monitoring the eradication of H. pylori, in other words, by establishing with precision if the patient has been cured. Should the patient be found to be negative regarding the presence of H. pylori bacteria, alternative diagnosis such as an endoscopy is recommended.
